Abstract	At the beginning of the last year the Law of Ukraine “On Preventing and Combating Domestic Violence” of December 7, 2017, No. 2229-VIII (Law), adopted in the framework of the implementation of the National Strategy for Human Rights, approved by the Decree of the President of Ukraine of August 25, 2015, No. 501/2015, came into force. The purpose of the adoption of the Law is to create an effective mechanism for counteracting all forms of gender-based or family-based violence, and ensuring gender equality. According to the Law, the prosecutor’s office is one of the actors involved in the preventing and combating domestic violence. This circumstance necessitated the clarification of the role of the prosecutor’s office in preventing and combating domestic violence, as well as determination of its responsibilities and powers in this area. The article is an overview. The purpose of the article is to determine the role of the prosecutor’s office in preventing and combating domestic violence, which involves an analysis of the scope of its duties and powers in this area. The issues of measures to prevent and counteract domestic violence and its main actors are also considered. If the problem of combating domestic violence has been studied at a scientific level for a relatively long time, the directions of prevention and counteraction to this destructive phenomenon have been outlined at the legislative level recently, so this topic remains open to scientific discussions. As regards the role of the prosecutor’s office in preventing and combating domestic violence, this topic has not been subjected to a thorough analysis yet, that has made its choice for scientific consideration. As it was found out, the scope of prosecutor’s office powers to prevent and counteract domestic violence outside the sphere of criminal justice is insufficient and does not allow to effectively perform official duties in this area. Based on the study of legislative acts and jurisprudence, conclusions have been made that the role of the prosecutor’s office in preventing and combating domestic violence outside the sphere of criminal justice is smoothed out. That undoubtedly causes the need to expand the powers of the prosecutor’s office and to provide the prosecutor’s office with powers aiming at preventing and counteracting domestic violence and which are to be foreseen in the Law of Ukraine “On Preventing and Combating Domestic Violence”.
